Byron Johnston is a critically acclaimed and award winning guitar player from the south coast of Great Britain.
His music showcases the diversity of the solo guitar with unifying sounds and inspirations from Spanish Flamenco to World Music, Classical, Jazz, Blues and beyond.
His performance takes people on a journey from the sounds of the traditional solo guitar through to a modern exploration of fusion guitar playing.
Byron is a graduate of The Academy Of Contemporary Music and it was during this time that he felt the calling to become a soloist. His debut solo album Oceano led to invitations to perform at The Royal Albert Hall’s Ignite series of concerts and was followed up with shows for the London Guitar Festival and International Guitar Festival. Not long after these concerts Byron toured with percussive guitarist and songwriter Jon Gomm appearing in arts centres across the UK as part of The Acoustic Guitar Heaven Tour.
His later collaboration with world music singer Randolph Matthews led to headline appearances on the UK festival scene and had both artists opening for Grammy Award nominee Joan Armatrading at the start of her World Tour; the story of this musical collaboration was promptly picked up and broadcast in a programme for BBC Radio 2.
Byron’s commitment to his craft has led him onwards to the life of an international performer, who has since travelled from Alaska to Asia with everything in between.
Along his travels through music Byron found himself stepping beyond playing conventional recitals to uncover new expressive approaches to music. He challenges the traditional beliefs about performance with new and expressive ways to tell the story of music through the guitar.
This approach to guitar performance represents an exciting new wave of music that is redefining the boundaries and possibilities of the acoustic guitar. It can be heard on Byron’s recorded albums and is part of a new genre of acoustic music that is best enjoyed when seen live at concerts
Byron spends over half of the year touring, recording and on stage with his guitars where he is most at home, he is also currently authoring his first book which provides a behind the scenes insight into the music industry entitled Unlocking The Music Business.
Byron is a true fusion guitarist who explores the rich musical legacy of the worlds’ most popular instrument. To quote one reviewer…
“It is a case of a sound being worth a thousand words”
